So, what’s this blog supposed to do anyway?
I began a year of volunteer service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Baltimore, MD in August 2009. I’m a writing instructor at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, a small, private high school for low income families part of the Cristo Rey Network of schools. My job is to teach sophomores to improve their writing and to work with them on their written assignments for other classes. My other responsibilities include helping with college counseling, tutoring freshmen algebra, co-running the Extended Day after school program, and various other tasks.
This blog chronicles my time before, during, and, perhaps, even after my service and will act as a way to reflect on my experiences. Subjects will include teaching experiences, writing tips, volunteering, the City of Baltimore, community, morality, spirituality, sometimes being the “bad” guy, and coping with being known as “Mr. O’Keefe” (yikes!).
